Well, it's here. What could probably be one of the biggest holidays of the year is here. At midnight, Sega shipped off the Dreamcast. Yeah, I know, this is Playstation and Gameboy site, but c'mon, this is one of the biggest events of the year. We've heard rumors of the system, boasting internet capabilities, serious polygon power, and most importantly, a return to Sega. Yeah, it would really take a big, stockmarket crash mistake on Sega's to make the Dreamcast fail. So far, the installed base is looking pretty impressive with preorders. The price tag looks nice too. $250 can get you a system and a game, which when the PSX and Saturn came out, probably wouldn't have gotten you the box. But Sega seems to be on the ball. Sonic Adventure as well as many others serve as a platform with which to catapult Sega beyond the current systems. No surprises this time around. Plus all the talent behind them, the disappearance of Stolar, and the possibility of Working Designs teaming up with them seems to be nothing but good news. But still, I'm going to wait. It's hard for me to simply "forget" about the Saturn, which had potential to compently hang with the PS and N64.
The other big thing is Square's Final Fantasy VIII. Also set to be released alongside the DC, it too is gala event in and of itself. It goes along with Square's apparent philosophy of redefining the RPG genre. Having played the demo of it (I recently got a copy of Brave Fencer Musashiden), I must admit, it's hella tough, but it appears to have did the impossible: It seems to top FFVII in terms of looks. The story and gameplay elements I'll save for a review. It's hard not to get excited about this game, it seems that this game does everything right. The guardian force concept looks promising enough, and I have confidence the Draw/Stock and the Junction system will allow for ultimate character customization, not like FFVII, but on a significantly deeper level. Don't hold me to it, but call it good speculation.
