You know, I'm 19 and I got Gameboy. Say what you will, but for a long time I wanted one. Nintendo made me want it. That was then...
Nintendo then came out with that Gameboy Color, and I admitted, it was too good to be true. The portable was in color and now, I had to have one. So I got one and got Zelda: A Link to the Past. It was good. Then, it will downhill from there. Sure, Super Mario Brothers was good, but it did little to satiate this need for quality games. Out of sheer desperation, I tried Pokémon. It was entertaining for awhile, but something pushed me back. It was good, though repetitive. Pokémon Pinball came closer, but still it lacked something. Come to find out, all my games lacked a certain charm. I dunno, was it me? or was it the system? I figured it out, it was the system.
I don't know if you noticed, but out of all the GBC games you played or seen, how many are original titles. Let me see, I'm getting a big fat zero. Most of the games are remixes of older games, the others are scaled down ports from the 64 or the PSX. That's what you call identifying a system. Ohh, gee! I can either play colorized versions of old games or (for the most part) fairly crappy translations. What to do? Come out with a list of what I want.
Well, how about more games like Mario Bros., if there has to be remixes, I would prefer for them to be great NES ports, instead of mediocre 32/64-bit ports. I mean, games like Mario 3 (at least), Metroid, and third party titles like Strider, Life Force and Super C would kick start a little life into Nintendo's aging system. What would really jack life into the system are some fresh new titles. A new Mega Man game anyone? How about a brand-spanking new Metroid title?
Of course, I understand a decided lack of investing time in a new game. There's the Playstation and the N64 and that new Dreamcast thingie, who would want to invest in an 8 bit system? Sure, I understand that, but isn't there someone somewhere who would dedicate the time to a killer GB app?
Fortunately, things are looking up. Mario Golf seems to ooze enough personality out to be more than a "mediocre N64 port", Resident Evil seems to be pushing the system to some new limits. And I hear that Castlevania 2 and Crystalis is one the horizon.
But Nintendo has to watch out, SNK and Sega has team up on the Neo-Geo Pocket Color, Sonic the Hedgehog has already piqued my interest as have the various Neo fighting games. But of course, Nintendo shouldn't worry, right?
I don't know about that. So far, the immortal portable isn't pleasing my eye, and is gathering dust someplace. The NGPC has an influx of original titles, or at least unique adaptations thereof. The GBC? Ted-Turnerization of older games. I've lost interest in the darned little thing, but I want to like it, but Nintendo's making it real hard to do so.
I'm not giving up though, I'm sure that at the very least, we'll see a generous helping of NES conversions, and hopefully those will include third party as well as first party conversions. (And please, don't get me started on that GB Advanced).
